Ingredients for the smoothie:

Ingredients for topping:

Directions:

Add all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into two glasses, and top with berries and oats. If you want a thinner smoothie, add more almond milk. Also if you want to increase the protein powder in this recipe, add more liquid unless you want to eat it with a spoon! Many protein powders have varying amounts of thickening agents like cellulose gum, guar gum, or xanthan gum added to them, so you might have to adjust the liquid amount regardless if you use a different one than I did. I used Chocolate Milkshake Protein Powder made by Quest Nutrition.

A note about the ingredients:

I’ve gone through phases of very low energy, and I notice that maca powder helps perk me up a bit more, especially when watching my calories. It could just be the additional carbs, but it might be from the maca itself. It has a mild flavor, a bit similar to a very mild cinnamon and nutmeg blend, but without the sharpness. It’s a hard flavor to pin down until you try it.

My trainer incorporates cacao powder into his diet. He says it’s helped him lean out for an upcoming competition, and hey, if it works for him, why not? It also has a very impressive antioxidant profile, so it definitely won’t hurt adding it into your diet.

I also add in green powder, because again, most greens in powder form are packed with antioxidants and make me feel better about what I’m putting into my body.

I am not going to feed you lines about how any of these trendy health foods are the golden egg missing from your diet that will cure all your ailments. Nope, sorry. The daily grind of a good diet, good sleep, and exercise are what will get you to your goals. Not a sprinkling of greens. Please don’t buy into the hype. Understand that all of these are merely a helpful tool to get in some nutrients that might be lacking in your current diet, and can be components of a delicious smoothie like this one.
